A Heartfelt Reflection on the Protecting Mother Earth Conference 2024

Journey to Cherokee, NC

Ian and I set off on a journey that would leave a lasting mark on our hearts and minds. Driving from Baltimore to Cherokee, NC, we felt a mix of excitement and curiosity about what lay ahead. Our stop in Bristol, a charming town straddling the Virginia-Tennessee border, added a touch of magic to our trip. Enjoying BBQ and live music, and capturing memories at the iconic lit-up sign, set the tone for an adventure filled with connection and discovery. As we arrived in Cherokee late at night, our hearts were full of anticipation for the days to come.

Immersive Experience and Deep Connections

From the moment we set up our tents, we were embraced by a community of kindred spirits. The conference's outdoor setting, with its main plenary tent and various meeting spaces, fostered a sense of unity and purpose. The kitchen tent, where volunteers lovingly prepared meals for 1,500 attendees daily, became a sanctuary of nourishment and healing. The chestnut bread, in particular, felt like a warm hug for the soul.

Each day, we were invited to delve into thought-provoking sessions, exploring topics that resonated deeply. The Carbon Markets 101 session was a revelation, shedding light on the complex impacts of carbon markets on indigenous communities. This session, inspired by Oscar's inquiries from Chigayaco, highlighted the intricate web of challenges and opportunities we face.

Inspiring Interactions and a Supportive Community

The heart of the conference was undoubtedly the people we met. From indigenous leaders across the Americas to activists on the front lines of environmental justice, the diversity and dedication of attendees were awe-inspiring. The stories of struggle and resilience shared by individuals like Rosalba, an indigenous leader from Cauca, Colombia, left an indelible mark on my heart.

Participating in the sweat lodge ceremony was a profound and transformative experience. The physical intensity and spiritual depth of the ritual, combined with the unwavering support of the women around me, created a space of vulnerability and connection that I will forever cherish.

Engaging Activities and Unforgettable Moments

Ian and I brought our own touch of creativity to the conference by performing in the talent show. Ian's violin performance, accompanied by the audience's rain-like sounds, created an electrifying atmosphere of unity and joy. The warmth and praise we received afterward were heartwarming and affirming.

On the third day, I embraced a slower pace, wandering down to the river where children played with pure, unfiltered joy. I couldn't resist diving into the cool, refreshing water, clothes and all. As I floated, a flock of geese flew gracefully overhead, a beautiful reminder of the harmony between us and the natural world.

The final day was a bittersweet farewell, filled with heartfelt connections and shared gratitude. Ensuring that the voices from South America were included in the conference's takeaways was a meaningful contribution to our collective mission. The closing ceremony around the sacred fire, where we exchanged thanks and farewells, was a powerful and emotional conclusion.

Special Encounters and Future Collaborations

The people I met at the conference left an indelible impression on my heart. Amber, who immediately offered her help and support, and Rosalba, who invited me to visit Cauca, were among the many individuals who touched my soul with their kindness and generosity. Conversations with Amy, who offered grant consulting and fiscal sponsorship support for Proyecto Chigayaco, and Cassandra, who provided valuable insights on carbon markets, were invaluable.

Seeing elk twice during the conference felt like a profound and positive omen, a reminder of the interconnectedness of all life and the importance of our work.

Moving Forward with Gratitude

The Protecting Mother Earth conference was more than an event; it was a gathering of hearts and minds dedicated to creating a better world. The camaraderie, knowledge, and inspiration we gained will fuel our efforts at Proyecto Chigayaco. I am profoundly grateful for the experiences, the people I met, and the lessons learned. Together, we will continue to protect and preserve our planet for future generations.
