Preserving the Rainforest. Conserving Peace.

In the Putumayo rainforest, near the Chigayaco waterfall, lies a story of resilience and renewal. A four-hectare plot of forest, once full of life, was devastated by deforestation and the threat of coca cultivation. But hope emerged from this challenging situation.

Determined to make a difference, we raised $6,000 USD to reclaim and restore this land, ensuring it remains a safe and vibrant part of the community. By protecting this area, we aim to prevent the return of harmful activities and promote a future of peace and prosperity for the local residents.

Our Mission

At Proyecto Chigayaco, our mission is to protect and restore the rainforest in Putumayo, Colombia, ensuring a sustainable and peaceful future for all. We are committed to safeguarding biodiversity, promoting environmental stewardship, and supporting the local community through eco-tourism and sustainable development initiatives.

Our Story

Proyecto Chigayaco began with a vision to reclaim and restore the rainforest land that had been devastated by deforestation. Our initial goal was to raise funds to purchase and protect a four-hectare plot, and with the incredible support of our community, we achieved this milestone. Inspired by our success, the landowner offered us an additional eight hectares of untouched jungle, which we are now working to acquire and protect.

Inspiration from the People of Putumayo

One of the biggest inspirations for Proyecto Chigayaco is the resilience and spirit of the people of Putumayo. During my visit, I was profoundly moved by the Museum of Memory in El Placer, which preserves the history of the region's violent past and the incredible efforts of its inhabitants to achieve peace. The museum, initiated by Father Nelson Cruz Soler in 1996, documents the horrors of armed conflict between guerrillas and paramilitaries, showcasing artifacts that tell the story of a community’s struggle and resilience.

Firsthand accounts revealed not only the violence endured by the people of Putumayo but also their unwavering efforts to bring peace to their region. Community members like Oscar from La Reserva Chigayaco and Nora from Exploremos Putumayo are using eco-tourism and community tourism to show the rest of Colombia and the world that Putumayo is much more than a war-scarred, unsafe place. It is a region rich in culture, biodiversity, and potential, worthy of visiting and supporting.
